July inflation hits 10-year high

China's consumer price index rose by 5.6% in July over the same period last year, according to the latest figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). Urban consumer prices rose 5.3% while rural consumer price went up 6.3%, Economic Observer reported (in Chinese). Among the eight key categories of production counted in the index, food and housing contributed most to the increase, rising 15.4% and 4.4% respectively. None of the remaining categories, which include clothing, alcohol and tobacco, home appliances, health care, entertainment and transport and communications, rose by more than 2.2%.
