Shanghai index breaks 5,000-point mark

The Shanghai Composite Index closed at 5032.49 points on August 23, breaking the milestone 5,000-point mark for the first time, Xinhua reported (in Chinese).  The Shenzhen Component Index closed at 17639.22, up 1.77%. Total trade volume on the two markets reached US$33 billion. Meanwhile the number of new trade accounts has risen dramatically this year, with the total number of accounts exceeding 115 million.
