$242bn Moscow-Beijing high speed railway planned

Authorities in China and Russia are planning a RMB1.5 trillion (US$242 billion) Moscow-Beijing high-speed rail link, Bloomberg reported, citing a Weibo microblog post by Beijing’s municipal government. The journey along the 7,000-kilometer (4,350-mile) rail line would take two days on a route passing through Kazakhstan, according to the post. The rail line was mooted in November; Alexander Misharin, a first vice-president at state-owned OAO Russian Railways said that month in an interview that the plan would cost US$60 billion to reach Russia’s border and would cut the Moscow-Beijing journey from five days to 30 hours.
