Almost a third of Chinese who log onto the internet use their mobile phones to do so, state media reported. An industry expert said about 84.5 million Chinese, or 30% of the country’s internet users, use their mobile phones to connect to the internet. Yang Zemin, director of the Telecom Research Institute under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said China now has 616 mobile phone users, with 68.7 million new cell phones being registered in the first eight months of the year. He said there are 275 million internet users, and 85% used broadband. The number of fixed-line phone users in August declined to 354 million, down 11 million from the 2007 figure, Yang said. He said the total telecom industry revenue reached US$79.1 billion through August, up 8.5% from a year earlier.
