36 dead from pig-borne disease

Thirty-six people are dead and 30 are in critical condition after being infected by Streptococcus suis, a pig-borne illness currently affecting nine cities in Sichuan province, the South China Morning Post reported, citing the Sichuan Health Bureau. By Sunday, more than 4,000 tonnes of pork products from Sichuan had been seized. While contact with products from ill pigs causes infection, it should be safe to eat fully cooked pork, said Li Mingyuan of Sichuan University's Microbiology Department.
