3G service in 2008: official

[photopress:espnEVDOphone_thumb.jpg,full,alignright]When China hosts the Olympic Games in 2008 it will also have 3G working so that those interested (number as yet unquantified) will be able to see highlights of their mobile phones.

Xu Qin, director of hi-tech industrial department with the National Development and Reform Commission, said, ‘We would observe our commitment to the International Olympic Committee and provide 3G service in cities where Olympic games are held.’

That is the officcial word. But there is an ongoing final trial of China’s home-grown technology TD-SCDMA which has muddied the picture.

Xu Qin said, ‘D-SCDMA is one of the international standards recognized by the International Telecom Union and is developing smoothly.’ And he said it was getting mature but did not reveal any detailed schedule and plan which is a little worrying.

He said China would also participate in research of Beyond-3G or 4G technologies but he warned of possible challenges for new generation of mobile technologies.
