Nearly every family in Beijing will eventually own a car which translates to 5m vehicles on the city's roads by 2020, state media reported, citing a study commissioned by Beijing's municipal government to help plan the city's transport system in the coming years. Beijing will build more highways and roads and encourage its residents to use public transportation. One plan calls for building thirteen giant parking lots in the city's outlying suburbs to accommodate the vehicles of suburbanites who take public transit downtown.
