Chinese Premier Li Keqiang welcomed his French counterpart in Beijing on Monday, to discuss topics including agricultural and industrial trade, market access and international free trade.
Li told Edouard Philippe that China will restart importing beef from France, realising the end to an embargo placed on European produce two years ago during the mad cow disease crisis.
There were also talks regarding the future purchases of Airbus planes, with Li hinting at buying more despite the subject drawing controversy during President Emanuel Macron’s visit to China earlier in the year. Chinese officials were reportedly unhappy with the public disclosure of some negotiation briefings regarding Airbus, according to Reuters.
On the prospect of further trade frictions with the US, Li championed the importance of international free trade, saying that there are “no winners from fighting a trade war”, and that “all sides should join together to expand growth and not engage in putting up trade barriers or protectionism.”
