ABI Research thinks Information Technology vendors getting greener

In one year a 1U rack switch with 24 Ethernet ports in continuous use will consume 2190 kWh which is a lot of flaming heat as shown here.

Things you did not know about computers and probably do not want to know.

In one year a 1U rack switch with 24 Ethernet ports in continuous use will consume 2190 expensive kWh, and the coal used to generate that power will release two tons of CO2 along with other pollutants.

ABI Research vice president Stan Schatt  said, ‘IT equipment vendors are finding that many vendors have consolidated older, energy inefficient data centers and created their own green data centers. Their goal is to show customers that their equipment’s green features really can result in significant energy reduction and cost savings.’

A number of factors are driving the market increase in ‘green’ branded products:

China, among others, imposes regulations on all IT imports, covering hazardous materials, recyclability, and other risks.

The increasing cost of electricity and of cooling means that green initiatives can save money.
And many cystomers have procurement policies which emphasize green purchasing.

ABI Research’s paid report Green Wi-Fi, Data Centers, and Network Switches evaluates the efforts of vendors to offer “green” Wi-Fi equipment, data center equipment, and network switches. It rates vendors’ products and initiatives, and assesses equipment environmental performance.
