Central and local government will spend Yn55.5bn over the next decade to reduce pollution in the Bohai Sea off China's northern coast, South China Morning Post said. The Bohai Sea receives 25bn tonnes of polluted water annually from the Yellow, Liao and several smaller rivers that are considered to be among the most polluted in China. This has led to a drop in the number of fish and other forms of marine life in the sea and has caused a sharp increase in outbreaks of algal blooms, known as red tides.
The plan provides for Yn21.5bn to be spent on sewage treatment and waste processing plants in cities around the sea and for Yn12.6bn to be used to deal with the pollution from agriculture and fish breeding. A further Yn20.8bn will be used to protect the ecosystem along the seashore.
