Seven Chinese activists landed on the disputed Diaoyu Islands to claim Chinese sovereignty over the Japan-controlled islands. Japan's coast guard detained the group, which will be administered by Okinawa prefecture. It is the second Chinese group since 1996 that has landed on the islands, known in Japanese as the Senkaku Islands. Chinese and Japanese diplomats exchanged complaints over the incident. The islands are claimed by Japan, China and Taiwan.
