Auditor hints of going after other fish

Irregular and/or illegal practices in state-owned banks, utilities and other companies have revealed problems in macroeconomic controls and regulations, Auditor-General Li Jinhua said on the National Audit Office web site. Li's assertion implied departments overseeing these entities needed auditing. One audit office source quoted by state media said pilot audits had already been launched into so far unpatrolled areas such as funds, including the national education fund. By 2007, fund audits will account for half the auditing workload of the office, the source said, adding that audits would be released to the public to improve transparency. The office was also looking into improving its own efficiency, according to Deputy Auditor-General Liu Jiayi who said 60% of auditing projects in mid-sized and large cities will be fully computerized by 2007.
