Leading mainland internet search provider Baidu will provide wireless search functions to China Unicom’s 3G subscribers, Reuters reported. Under the agreement, Baidu’s search technology will be embedded in Unicom’s 3G telephones, allowing users to search for images, news, MP3 files and other online content on their mobile phones and on Unicom’s mobile websites. The strategic partnership will compete with Google Android telephones being deployed in the China market which have Google search technology embedded in the Android operating system. Baidu also signed a similar partnership agreement with China Telecom in May.
