The Baojun 630 is the first passenger car under the new Baojun brand. Baojun, which rolls off the production line next month, comes from General Motor’s joint venture with Wuling Automobile, SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile. The plan is to launch a new Baojun model every year in the next several years.
GM said the new brand was created to address growing demand for affordable passenger cars in China, and is aimed at competing with the country’s homegrown brands including Zhejiang Geely and BYD.
As for the numbers in the sedan’s name, the first digit refers to its model series, the second to its body type, and the third to its being the earliest generation of the Baojun brand.
According to GM, Baojun’s passenger vehicle sales and distribution network will be based on SAIC-GM-Wuling’s existing network, but the joint venture plans to incorporate new distributors for Baojun automobiles.
