The Beijing Science and Technology Commission would like to see 30,000 renewable energy cars on the city’s roads by the end of 2012.
The commission said the Beijing municipal government will provide subsidies of up to RMB60,000 (US$9,000) to residents who opt for renewable energy cars. In addition, 100 large charging stations and 36,000 smaller scale charging points will be built throughout the capital.
Beijing is home to about 4.5 million automobiles, with an estimated 1,900 new cars coming on to the overcrowded the roads each day.
SteelGuru reports the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has set a target of 5 million renewable energy cars in China over the next 10 years as part of the country’s Renewable Energy Car Development Plan for 2011 to 2020.
