The Chinese government has set aside US$199.5 million for major pork suppliers across 253 counties, the Ministry of Finance announced. The funds will be used mainly for the reconstruction of pig farms, the purchase of thoroughbred pigs and vaccinations, state media reported. Deng Fujiang, deputy director and secretary general of the China Meat Association, said China's pork consumption per person had increased 19.6 kg and since 1990. The new farms are intended to encourage pig farming and increase farmers' income amid high prices and short supply of pork, the ministry said.
