Beijing’s policymakers have identified 1,457 unused plots of land, many which could be repossessed by the government, in a continued effort to crackdown on developers leaving sites idle for speculative land banking purposes, the South China Morning Post reported. The Ministry of Land and Resources compiled a list of unused plots and the China Banking Regulatory Commission will conduct risk assessments on the companies involved. About 80% of the plots could be repossessed by the government, according to China Securities Journal. The move suggests the central government is pushing developers to turn their sites into housing projects in order to increase supply. Hainan and Jiangsu provinces, as well as the cities of Beijing and Guangzhou, have the most unused land, accounting for almost 25% of idle sites, with more than 70% earmarked for residential purposes.
