Beijing denies Guangdong's vacation plan

A plan by the Guangdong government to reinstate the “golden week” holiday in May has been rejected by Beijing, the South China Morning Post reported. On Wednesday, Guangdong announced it would restore the holiday to its previous five-day duration to stimulate tourism. Other localities including Chongqing, Hunan and Xinjiang all announced plans to adopt a similar scheme. The next day, the State Council ordered local authorities to strictly adhere to the national holiday schedule as set out by the central government and not make changes without its permission. Last year Beijing decided to shorten the week-long May holiday to one day and replace it with three traditional festivals falling on other dates.
