Beijing sets water use quotas

China announced it will set stricter water use quotas for Beijing companies in 2004. The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Water Resources said it signed new water supply agreements with 10 large enterprises in the capital and will raise water prices to other high water use businesses. Chinese law states that water squandering is punishable by fines up to RMB 100,000 (US$12,000). The move is aimed at encouraging implementation of water-saving technology to reduce waste by bathhouses, car washes, golf courses and ski resorts.
