[photopress:Bill_Gates_promises_the_earth.jpg,full,alignright]A few words of explanation and personal bias. I have interviewed Bill Gates probably as much as any journalist. He does not always get it right. But he is always fully focussed on the question and gives himself a small pause before answering. Then he speaks in a smooth, grammatical, intelligent flow.
OK, the tone and pitch of his voice is not his glory but, like the priest in The Power and the Glory, it is the content you should concentrate on and that is quite amazingly accurate. Say about 98% of the time. He was a bit slow on the Internet but caught up at flank speed. (The illustration is a picture of him speaking in China. I checked all the photographs and he has a rinse in his hair. I think it is Miss Clairol’s Loving Care. I know it well. It is the one I use myself.)
So if Bill Gates says Microsoft will build research and development parks in Beijing and Shanghai in a bid to expand its business in China that is what will happen.
And he said the growth of China’s software industry will stun the world, as the country pays more and more attention to innovation and produces hundreds of thousands of computer majors a year.
He said, ‘China is a market (for the software industry), but also a contributor to this market.’ Work on the basis that Bill Gates is right. Normally, he is.
In China, Microsoft has the most comprehensive research and development system outside its headquarters in Seattle, with 1,200 engineers.
