The Bush administration opposes proposed bills in the US Congress that would impose a 27.5 percent tariff on Chinese goods and repeal permanent normal trade relations with China, US ambassador to China Clark Randt said.
China has been the fastest growing export market for the US in the last two years. In 2002, China was the US?seventh largest export market, and is likely to be the sixth largest this year, according to the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.
Regarding the growing trade imbalance between the two countries, Clark Randt said "It has given rise in Washington to questions of basic fair play."
