Bush warns Europe on ending China embargo

While US President Bush and European leaders resolved their differences over Iraq, a new conflict arose over the lifting of an arms embargo against China. Bush warned the Europeans that the US Congress could retaliate if Europe repeals the 15-year ban, imposed after the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown on pro-democracy activists. French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, however, said the ban should move ahead. In a clear message to Europe ahead of Bush's visit, Congress said lifting the ban would harm U.S. relations with Europe.
