TikTok owner ByteDance Ltd. added “Flipchat” to its portfolio this week, a new instant messaging application seen as a direct challenger to Tencent Holdings’ WeChat, reported Caixin.
Known as Feiliao in Chinese, Flipchat hopes to make a dent where others have failed, combining messaging with open or private forums while integrating Alibaba’s Alipay and Taobao.
ByteDance is also planning a music app for the fall that could challenge the likes of Spotify and Apple Music, said Caixin sources. The music app is mainly aimed at developing markets where paid music services have yet to garner a large user base, and has secured rights from two major Indian labels.
