The chief financial officer of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei was taken into custody by Canadian authorities after the US called for her extradition, the Financial Times reports.
Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, is alleged to have sold US-origin products to Iran in the years since 2016, breaching sanctions brought in by President Barack Obama.
Huawei confirmed that Meng had been arrested in Vancouver but said that it has “been provided very little information regarding the charges and is not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms. Meng.”
Huawei “complies with all applicable laws and regulations where it operates, including applicable export control and sanction laws and regulations of the UN, US and EU,” the statement read.
The Chinese embassy has urged the US and Canada to immediately release Meng and that China “firmly opposes and strongly protests over such kind of actions which seriously harmed the human rights of the victim.”
The charges echo those lodged by the US against fellow Chinese phonemaker ZTE earlier this year, which led to crippling sanctions that brought the company to the brink of collapse.
