French retail giant Carrefour (CA.EPA) has been temporarily forced to shut down an outlet in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou following allegations in a CCTV broadcast that it sold expired chicken and labeled regular chicken as the more expensive free-range variety, The Wall Street Journal reported. A spokesman for Carrefour said Zhengzhou’s industrial and commercial bureau gave orders on Sunday to temporarily close the store for reorganization but did not offer details on the reorganization or a timeline for the outlet’s reopening. “We accepted the industrial and commercial bureau’s decision,” the spokesman said. Authorities have yet to decide on a time for reopening, said a spokeswoman from Zhengzhou’s industrial and commercial bureau. Carrefour posted a message Saturday on its Sina Weibo account, a Twitter-like microblogging service, that it has set up an emergency panel to investigate food-quality management at its Zhengzhou outlet. The supermarket chain apologized and promised to enhance training “to safeguard the interests of consumers.”
