Washington will continue to seek structural reforms in trade talks with China on issues such as intellectual property rights and technology transfers, said US Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, regardless of Beijing’s offer to buy 10 million more tonnes of US soybeans.
“Still, the structural core issues of intellectual property transfer have to be dealt with,” Perdue said. “We will not be bought off as a country over purchases without eliminating some of these non-trade barriers in China.”
China has recently reopened its ports to shipments of US soybeans following a freeze late last year. According to Chinese customs data, soybean volumes from the US nearly doubled last month from December to 135,814 tonnes.
This is still only half as that bought a year earlier, before the onset of the trade war, the data shows.
