Cathay Pacific boosts capacity

Cathay Pacific will increase passenger capacity by 11% next year as the economy picks up and demand for premium-class travel accelerates.

CEO Tony Tyler said, "It’s certainly very strong at the moment. That’s giving us a good feeling and, of course, great results."

The carrier expects net income to more than double this year, helped by an 11% increase in passenger numbers and a 20% increase in freight carried.

Next year the airline is due to receive nine new widebody passenger aircraft to cope with the demand.

Cargo capacity will also be increased with six new Boeing 747-8 freighters in the second half of 2011 and four more in 2012.

SF Gate reports the airline has also formed an air-cargo venture with affiliate Air China to access freight hubs in Shanghai and Beijing. Flights will begin in the next few months.
