China Central Television (CCTV) may team up with telecom network operator China Mobile to launch an internet-based TV station in a bid to capitalize on the growing popularity of online video, the South China Morning Post reported. CCTV has already moved a large chunk of its content online to CCTV.com, but the new venture would be a more interactive, comprehensive online video platform, according to Zhang Jisong, an official from CCTV’s Internet Communication Center. The move follows a pilot run of the station during the Olympics and has been directed by the Communist Party’s central committee, according to a statement by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, which administers CCTV. The statement added that CCTV management was looking for an effective way to regulate content.
