Agriculture officials in Jiangsu province ordered 377,000 chickens to be slaughtered after birds infected with the lethal H5N1 influenza virus were discovered in two locations, the Wall Street Journal reported. Authorities also banned the transport of poultry in or out of the affected areas. The outbreaks follow recent discoveries of the virus in Hong Kong, India and Southeast Asia. The disease is mainly to dangerous to poultry, though 38 human H5N1 cases worldwide have resulted in 29 deaths this year.
