China aims to create 50mn urban jobs

China raised the target for creating new urban jobs in its latest five-year plan till 2020, while aiming to keep the unemployment rate stable even as it steers the country towards a more high-tech economy, the South China Morning Post reports.  In the guidelines on promoting employment during the 13th five-year plan (2016-2020) issued by the State Council on Monday, the government is required to create at least 50 million new urban jobs, compared to the 45 million such jobs targeted in the previous five years. Beijing announced at the end of 2015 that it had created more than 64 million new urban jobs, and that the unemployment rate had stayed at 4.1% – far below the target of 5% – from 2010-2015. However, the credibility of that official unemployment rate has been long questioned by researchers.
