China to announce yuan convertibility plan this year

China’s State Council will unveil a plan later this year that would allow yuan capital-account convertibility as part of measures to free up its currency and interest rates, Bloomberg reported. The plan would also include a new mechanism to allow individual investments overseas, said the State Council in a statement after a meeting on economic reforms for 2013. The meeting was led by Premier Li Keqiang. The announcement also outlined measures such as reforming the household-registration system, expanding company trials of value-added taxes, and improving risk controls for local government debt.
