China’s State Council has approved the Guanzhong-Tianshui Economic Zone Development Plan in the country’s north-western region. It is planned that the zone will be a base for advanced high-tech and agriculture industries by 2020.
This will be the third economic zone in the north: Sichuan’s Chengyu economic zone in the center and Guangxi’s Beibu gulf economic zone in the south being the other two. The aim is it for it to become an engine to boost the economy under the Great Western Development Strategy.
The Guanzhong-Tianshui economic zone includes the five cities of Xi’an, Baoji, Xianyang and Tongchuan Weinan in Guanzhong region, Shaanxi province, and Tianshui in Gansu province.
Shaanxi province’s governor Yan Chunqing said, "Development of Guanzhong will be focused on high-tech, equipment manufacturing, aerospace industry, mechanised agriculture and tourism industry."
The Guanzhong-Tianshui region covers an area of over 50,000 square metres and is home to more than 60% of Shaanxi province’s population, generating 68.5% of the provincial gross domestic product (GDP) and 26.9% of that of the north-western region.

The infrastructure includes highways connecting Tianshui to Baoji, Dingxi, Pingliang and Longnan cities and railway connecting Baoji, Tianshui and Lanzhou, and an airport for Tianshui city.
