Beijing responded to the White House’s latest escalation of trade tensions with scorn yesterday, calling the threats to impose further tariffs on Chinese imports “extortion” and vowing to retaliate with a new list of duties for US products, reports Caixin.
“If the US loses its sense and publishes a (new) list, China will be forced to take comprehensive measures that are both strong in quantity and gravity to fight back forcefully,” said a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce.
The statement went on to reaffirm China’s commitment to liberalising its economy, which has been demonstrated in recent months with reforms to the financial and auto industries. “Regardless of how the external environment might change, China will… firmly move ahead with reform and opening-up at a pace it has already decided upon,” it read.
