China buzz: China's impact, Rio Tinto, budget cuts and smoking

Vice President Xi Jinping responds to foreign criticism of China’s impact on the world:

"There are a few foreigners, with full stomachs, [who] have nothing better to do than try to be backseat drivers of our country’s own affairs. China does not export revolution, hunger, poverty, nor does China cause you any headaches. Just what else do you want?"

Australian Nationals Party senator Barnaby Joyce on Chinalco’s proposed investment in Rio Tinto:

"The Australian government would never be allowed to buy a mine in China, so why would we allow the Chinese government to buy and control a key strategic asset in our country?"

Li Zhaoxing, spokesman for China’s parliament, on the budget cuts at the Great Hall of the People:

"When our president … and prime minister invite foreign heads of state, during the state banquet the menu will not exceed one soup and three dishes. No Chinese liquor will be served."

China’s Health Minister Chen Zhu encouraging China’s doctors to give up smoking:

"Medical workers and those who take decisions regarding people’s health should take the lead to quit smoking and completely ban indoor smoking to set a good example for their patients and others who look up to them."
