President Xi Jinping stopped off in Spain this week where he discussed bilateral investment opportunities and China’s partnership with the wider EU bloc, the South China Morning Post reports, before flying to Buenos Aires for the G20 leaders’ summit.
Xi was welcomed by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia in Madrid, where he used the opportunity to tout greater cooperation on trade, tourism and involvement in Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative.
In a statement published in Spanish media, Xi also promoted China’s relations with the EU.
“China is a staunch supporter of European integration, and China is happy to see a united, stable, open and prosperous Europe,” Xi is quoted as saying. “Under the current circumstances, it is in the common interests of both sides to deepen the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and the EU.”
