China may soon overtake the US to become the world's largest consumer of resources, the Standard of Hong Kong reported. The Pacific Economic Cooperation Council said China's burgeoning economy and a slowdown in the US housing market could combine to push China into top spot. The mainland's gross domestic product hit US$2.26 trillion last year, up 9.9% over the previous year. It has already surpassed the US in consumption of major world resources, including food, energy, industrial commodities and steel. China still lags the US in oil consumption.
