China cuts renewables target

China has lowered its goal for renewable energy production from 20% of total energy production by 2020 to 16% but has retained its targeted investment of US$187 billion dollars in the sector over the next 15 years, AFP reported, citing state media. Wu Guihui, a leading energy official at the National Development and Reform Commission told China Daily that the construction of hydro-electric dams will be the priority for investment under the renewables plan, which is still being formulated, but China will also actively develop wind, solar and biomass energy. Wu said hydro-electric power output will increase from the current 117 million kilowatts to 190 million in 2010 and 300 million by 2020. Currently 7.5% of China's energy comes from renewable sources, with the government hoping to raise this to 10% by 2010, the newspaper said. Up to 70% of China's energy comes from coal.
