China drives growth of Britain’s foreign student population

The British Council released a report this month predicting an increase of 83,000 international graduate students studying in Britain by 2024, of which Chinese students will make up 44%, The New York Times reported. Adding to the existing 223,745 graduate students, the estimated increase is equivalent to 3.5% growth per year, down from the 4.1% over the five years leading up to 2012. Some experts are concerned with an overreliance on Chinese students though, as China’s aging population will eventually result in a slowdown of students studying abroad. In addition to China, Britain is seeing the most growth in foreign students from India and Nigeria.
