China energy plans to focus on renewable sources

China will put greater emphasis on adjusting its energy structure this year with a focus on renewable energy and nuclear power, state media reported. Zhang Guobao, director of the National Energy Administration, said adjusting the pattern of energy development to fulfill China’s promises made at the Copenhagen climate summit last year would be the administration’s top priority. He said more efforts would be made in scientific research and development as there is "still much room for improvement." Separately, Wang Shucheng, a senior finance official under the National People’s Congress, said China needed more hydropower projects to keep its 2007 promise to make renewable resources account for 15% of total energy consumption by 2020.
