China halts more Airbus orders in EU dispute

Chinese carriers have suspended their purchase of 10 Airbus jets as the rift over the EU’s emissions tax scheme continues, Reuters reported, quoting unidentified sources. Two sources familiar with the matter said China would delay 10 more A330 long-haul planes from the European aircraft maker, on top of the 35 A330s and 10 A380 superjumbo jets blocked earlier this week. In total, sales of 55 Airbus planes worth US$14 billion have now purportedly been put in limbo – about 10% of all Airbus planes ever delivered to China. While Airbus did not say which airlines had delayed their purchases, insiders say it may have been Hong Kong Airlines. China is aggressively opposed to a new EU airline emissions tax scheme that charges flights to and from Europe based on their carbon emissions over the entire length of the flight and some say oversteps EU jurisdiction.
