China, Japan and South Korea announced an agreement to collaborate on the development of new telecommunications technology for fourth-generation (4G) mobile phones. Fourth-generation phones are scheduled to be introduced in the three countries in 2010 and are planned to be able to transmit data at 100 megabits per second. The agreements included plans for the three countries to hold regular meetings to exchange views on mobile technology and bandwidth allocation. The three governments said they plan to promote cross-border joint research at academic institutes and private firms.
