Beijing issued a defiant response to the latest sabre-rattling from the US regarding higher tariffs on Chinese goods, warning that any further decisions will again be met with equal retaliation Bloomberg reports.
“China has made full preparation for the US threats to escalate the trade war, and will have to retaliate to defend national pride and the people’s interests,” said China’s Ministry of Commerce in a statement.
Earlier this week, the White House expressed intentions to raise proposed tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imported goods from 10% to 25%. The president made this request to US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer. Public hearings will be held regarding the proposed measures at the end of the month.
“The US is playing a carrot-and-stick tactic on China, but this approach is not going to work on China,” the Chinese ministry added.
