China has announced a solution to barriers that affect imports of US soybeans and has released Chen Ziming, sentenced to 13 years in prison for his part in the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989, the Financial Times said. The moves appeared to be aimed at preparing the ground for a positive summit meeting between Presidents Jiang Zemin and George W Bush in late October.

China's ambassador to the UN has also told the General Assembly that his government would soon adopt measures to control the export of chemical and biological material that could be used to make weapons of mass destruction.
