China publishes new pollution targets

China will meet its binding target to reduce sulfur dioxide and chemical oxygen demand – an indicator of water pollution – by 10% of 2005 levels in 2010, reported state media. The Ministry of Environmental Protection also intend to exceed these targets by an additional 400,000 tons of sulfur dioxide and 200,000 tons of COD, increasing wastewater treatment capacity and installing sulfur removers. The government has prioritized heavy-metal pollution prevention in its efforts to reach its 11th Five-Year Plan targets. The ministry has also introduced new indicators to measure nitrogen oxide and ammonia nitrogen in order to more accurately reduce emissions and maintain water quality.
