China ranks second in Olympic medal total

The culmination of the 2012 Olympic games saw China come in second place with 38 gold medals to US’s 46, leaving many Chinese disappointed at being outdone by its superpower rival, Financial Times reported. Britain finished in third place with 29 gold medals, while Russia came in fourth with 24. Other emerging economies fared far worse, with India taking home only six medals, including two silvers, and Brazil earning three golds among its 17 medals overall. Pointing to the doping allegations of 16 year-old Ye Shiwen, some Chinese internet users argued that their athletes had been treated unfairly by the Western media. “We have lost what was ours to the imperialist power that is trying to contain China everywhere, but China will rise regardless!” said one commentator on a nationalist web forum. China ranked first in the gold medal count of the 2008 Olympics.
