China has confirmed a list of $16 billion worth of US imports that will be subject to 25% tariffs later this month, the country’s commerce ministry said on Wednesday, matching Washington’s latest move to put pressure on Beijing.
The tariffs, which will hit goods from fuel and cars to medical equipment, will take effect from August 23 – the same day the duties announced by the US on Tuesday are due to be activated.
The number of goods categories included in the list has more than doubled from a previous draft list made in June. The figure has risen to 333 from 114, according to Reuters, though the value of the tariffs has remained the same.
The continuing blow-for-blow approach suggests that tensions between the two administrations are continuing to ratchet up. China’s commerce ministry called the US’s measures “a very unreasonable practice” as it announced its response, while state media outlet China Daily accused the US of employing a “mobster mentality” in its trade policies.
