Descendants of forced laborers working for Japanese companies during the Sino-Japanese war filed China’s largest class action suit against Mitsubishi (8058.TYO) and Yantai Mitsubishi Cement in Chinese courts, Reuters reported. The plaintiffs are each seeking US$160,100 (RMB1 million) in compensation, a public apology in newspapers, as well as the erection of a memorial in remembrance of the forced laborers. The number of plaintiffs, including families and surviving forced laborers seeking redress, total at least 940, with combined claims reaching at least US$138.6 million. The lawsuit comes as Japan-China tensions heat up over territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
