The Lao National Assembly has formally approved a plan for a high-speed railway project that would link China to the Laotian capital of Vientiane. Construction of the 421-kilometer railway is to be launched in April.
This follows Thailand’s approval of a negotiation framework for a project for Thailand-China cooperation in high-speed rail in October.
China is very much into exploring its expertise in this area.
Apart from a high-speed railway system linking Kunming in China’s Yunnan province, Vientiane of Laos and Singapore, Chinese companies also assisted in the metro rail project in Mecca in Saudi Arabia and the Tinaco-Anaco railroad in mid-western Venezuela. Chinese firms will also participate in the high-speed railroads being built in Turkey.
China, with both Russia and Belarus, is also studying the feasibility of constructing a railway system to connect Moscow and Minsk.
English.News.cn reports that since 2003, China has signed about 30 agreements or memoranda of understanding for bilateral railway cooperation with other countries.
