China signs deal to finance and build two nuclear plants in Argentina

Beijing and Buenos Aires have signed an agreement that will see China build and finance two nuclear power plants in Argentina, The Financial Times reported. The first plant will cost around US$6 billion and use Canadian nuclear technology while the second will use China’s own  Hualong One reactor; both reactors will be built by the state-owned China National Nuclear Corp together with Argentina’s state-owned Nucleoeléctrica. While China has begun scaling back lending to much of Latin America, Argentina has received US$19 billion of lending for Chinese-led infrastructure projects since 2007, according to the Inter-American Dialogue’s China database.
