China spam grows in size

[photopress:China_Says_Good_bye_to_Spam_2.jpg,full,alignright]China as a source of spam has now moved up to the second position in the spammer league tables. The United States has many more spammers (1,983 against 300 odd) but China has fought off stiff opposition from Japan and Russia to come in second.

All of this from Spamhaus which publishes the lists as part of its international effort to track spam gangs and tackle not only junk, but potentially dangerous mail. Spamhaus claims some 200 spam gangs are responsible for 80 percent of spam received in North America and Europe.

While almost all ISPs claim to be highly against spam, the report also finds that a number of ISPs knowingly supply services to professional spammers.

A top-ten list of those ISPs responsible for delivering the most spam was headed up by verizonbusiness.com followed by serverflo.com and sbc.com.

In its current list of top-ten countries sending spam, Spamhaus finds the United States leads the charge with 1,983 current known spammers, followed not so closely behind by China with 304, Japan with 244 and Russia with 230.
